Technology decisions
that hold up.

Independent assessment and second opinions for SMBs. We help you make the technology calls that keep operations resilient — and document the reasoning so the decision holds up later. We advise, assess and document; your IT provider does the building. Defined scope, written deliverable, clean handoff.

Common starting points
Infrastructure assessment
Half-day review of your environment. Written findings, prioritized recommendations.
When things go wrong review
What actually happens to your business when something fails. Not the plan on paper — the reality underneath it.
Migration project
Scoped, executed, documented. Full handoff when it's done.
Vendor / platform evaluation
Independent guidance on what to buy, what to avoid, and why.

You'll recognize
these situations.

Technology strategy engagements usually start with a specific problem or a nagging feeling that something isn't right. Here's what that tends to look like.

️
Your infrastructure grew without a plan
You've added servers, storage, and services over the years and nobody has a clear picture of what's running, what's redundant, or what breaks if the main box goes down. You need someone to walk the environment and tell you what you actually have.
→ Infrastructure assessment
A migration is coming and nobody owns it
Moving to Microsoft 365, consolidating servers, retiring aging hardware, or getting off on-prem Exchange. The project is defined but nobody has scoped the risk, sequenced the work, or written down what "done" means. That part we can do; the execution belongs with your IT provider.
→ Migration planning & risk review
Your DR plan is a document, not a capability
Something is going to go wrong — a server, a site, a ransomware event, a key person walking out the door. The question isn't whether you have a plan. It's whether the business can actually function when the plan gets tested. Most can't answer that honestly until someone asks the right questions.
→ Continuity & recovery advisory
You need an independent voice on a vendor decision
The vendor says you need their product. Your team is split. You're about to sign a multi-year contract and you want someone without a commission on the line to tell you if it's the right call.
→ Vendor evaluation
️
Cloud is on the roadmap but the path isn't clear
Leadership wants a cloud strategy. The platform vendors want to sell you one. You need someone to sit on your side of the table and help you figure out what moving to the cloud actually means for your workloads, your team, and your budget — before you commit to anything.
→ Cloud readiness advisory
Compliance is asking about controls you don't have documented
An audit, a client questionnaire, or a cyber insurance renewal is asking about your controls, your policies, and your risk posture. Premiums are up. Coverage is narrowing. Carriers are declining renewals when the answers don't line up. You need those controls and policies to exist, to be accurate, and to be documentable.
→ Obligations readiness review

The full stack,
top to bottom.

Technology strategy at howldr spans the infrastructure layer through the risk and compliance layer. Most engagements touch more than one of these areas — that's the point.

Infrastructure & servers
Reviewing what you have — virtualisation, storage, Active Directory, the platform layer everything else depends on — and telling you where it is fragile. Your IT provider does the building.
Assessment · Design review · Planning
Microsoft 365 & messaging
Tenant readiness, identity and access review, and migration planning — so the move is scoped properly before anyone starts, and the risks are on paper first.
Readiness · Planning · Review
Storage & data management
Backup and retention reviewed against what the business actually needs. Knowing what data you have, where it lives, and what happens to it when something goes wrong.
Review · Risk · Documentation
Disaster recovery & business continuity
What happens to your business when something fails — a system, a site, a supplier, a person. Recovery plans that reflect operational reality, not just the checklist version that satisfies an auditor or an insurance carrier.
Assessment · Planning · Testing
️
Cloud strategy & migration
Azure, AWS, M365. Workload assessment, lift-and-shift vs. re-architect decisions, cost modelling. Independent guidance — no platform allegiance, no resale margin.
Advisory · Planning · Cost modelling
SQL Server & data platforms
Instance and HA/DR design reviewed, performance risks identified, migration planned. Architecture-level review — not DBA work, and not the implementation.
Design review · Risk · Planning
️
Obligations readiness
What your technical environment is actually obliged to do, what you can currently evidence, and where the gaps are. The written starting point — and the natural on-ramp to ProofWorks, which keeps the evidence afterwards.
Fixed scope · Written findings
Automation & agent risk
What your scripts, workflows and AI agents are permitted to do against production — and whether anyone could prove it. Reviewed here, controlled by leaps and bounds.
Review · Boundaries · Evidence
Vendor & platform evaluation
Structured evaluation of technology decisions before you commit. RFP support, independent scoring, and a written recommendation you can take to leadership.
Evaluation · Recommendation · Advisory

Defined scope.
Clean handoff.

Every engagement has a clear start, a clear end, and documentation you own when it's done. howldr does not sell managed services, monitoring, or day-to-day support, and does not resell hardware or licences — so there is never a product on the other side of the advice. Implementation goes to your IT provider, and we are happy to hand them the documentation to work from.

Thirty years of
infrastructure work.

Technology strategy at howldr isn't advisory work dressed up from a book. It comes from hands-on infrastructure work going back to when Exchange meant NT domains, fibre channel meant weekend maintenance windows, and disaster recovery meant hoping your tape rotation was right.

The work since then — virtualisation consolidations, SAN designs, Active Directory forests, SQL Server deployments, M365 migrations, and the shift toward cloud-first decisions — runs in a straight line from the server room to where the risk and compliance conversation lives today. That line matters, because the people asking the hard questions about your controls are the same ones who built the systems those controls are supposed to protect.

When howldr reviews your recovery posture or evaluates a cloud decision, it's informed by having actually stood up the environments being assessed. That tends to make the recommendations more useful — and more honest.
